If you searched something like “divorce coach near me” or “how do I get through a divorce in a small town,” here is the direct answer: a divorce coach helps you make decisions, manage your attorney relationship, and rebuild your life during and after divorce — and if you live in central Illinois, working with someone who actually knows this region matters more than you’d think.
I’m Katie VandenBerg, a CDC Certified Divorce Coach based in Peoria, Illinois, and I work with women and men across Peoria, Morton, Pekin, East Peoria, and the surrounding central Illinois communities. Below, I’m answering the questions I hear most, the same way I’d answer them in a consult.
What does a divorce coach actually do?
A divorce coach is not your attorney and not your therapist. Your attorney handles the legal filings. Your therapist helps you process grief and trauma. I sit in the space between those two things: the strategy, the decision-making, and the day-to-day reality of getting through a divorce without losing yourself in the process.
That includes things like:
- Preparing you for attorney meetings so you use your (expensive) time well
- Helping you understand why your case is moving at the pace it’s moving
- Building a communication plan with your attorney’s office
- Working through co-parenting decisions with a clear head
- Rebuilding your identity and confidence once the legal process winds down
Why can't I just ask ChatGPT or Google this stuff?
You can, and a lot of people do. AI tools are genuinely useful for understanding general timelines, legal terminology, or what to expect from a typical divorce process in Illinois. I use search tools too.
Where it falls short is anything that depends on your specific situation, your specific attorney, and your specific town. AI can tell you the average divorce takes six to eighteen months. It can’t tell you why month eight is the one that breaks most people, or help you draft the exact email that gets your attorney to respond without you sounding “difficult.” It also has no idea what it’s like to run into your ex’s family at the grocery store in a town of 8,000 people — because it’s never lived here.
That’s the gap a local, certified coach fills.
What makes divorce different in a small town or Central Illinois community?
In a city, you can largely disappear during a divorce. In Morton, Tremont, Pekin, or Peoria, you generally can’t. Your divorce shows up at church, at your kids’ school pickup line, at the grocery store, and in group texts you’re not part of anymore.
That reality changes the coaching. We don’t just talk about healing in the abstract. We build a specific plan for maintaining your composure and your reputation in a community where everyone already knows your business. This is one of the biggest reasons women in this area choose to work with someone local instead of a generic app or an out-of-state coach.
Information is free now. Discernment is not.

How is a divorce coach different from a divorce attorney?
Your attorney’s job is to advocate for your legal outcome. Custody terms, asset division, the final decree. What they’re generally not equipped or paid to do is help you decide what you actually want, prepare you emotionally for a hearing, or explain in plain language why your case has been quiet for two months.
I work alongside your attorney, not instead of them. Clients often tell me coaching makes their legal process much more affordable and less stressful, because they show up to attorney meetings prepared instead of using billable time to process emotions or ask questions a coach can answer for free. The money they spend on their attorney is money well spent because their efforts are focused and they are well educated ahead of time
How long does divorce coaching take?
It depends on where you are in the process and what you’re working through, but most clients work with me anywhere from a few months through the full length of their divorce, and some continue briefly afterward while rebuilding their new normal (dating again, co-parenting logistics, financial independence). We build the plan around your timeline, not a fixed program length.
Is divorce coaching worth it if I plan to or already have a good attorney?
Yes, and this is one of the most common things I hear from new clients: “My attorney is great, I just don’t know what to do with everything else.” A good attorney handles the legal file. They are not going to walk you through how to date again, how to talk to your kids about what’s happening, or how to hold your head up at the next school function. That’s the work I do.
On the flip side, YOUR attorney may be great but your STBX’s? Not so much. They may drag the process out, filing excessive or un-necessary motions to hopefully wear you down. I help you stay focused on the goal, discern if which attorney is causing the hold up (if any) and help you have appropriate expectations of results and timing.
One of my favorite parts of divorce coaching in Central Illinois is the relationships I have with Peoria Family Law Attorneys. I know when they have big trials. I can call them and ask what the hold up is from if our mutual clients are frustrated. I can do that. AI can’t.
